In May 1977,  with relatively less fanfare than in coming years, the first of the STAR WARS movies was released. And my Mom told me I was too young to go see it.

I was very disappointed.

But over the next 10 + years, I would encounter "Star Wars" everything: Kenner mini figures, music, models, movies, TV Specials, T-Shirts, Lunch Boxes etc. etc.

Now, I found this fascinating posting that highlights a Flickr Group which shows just how many Star Wars items were created over the years:

This wonderful little Flickr group, Growing Up Star Wars: 1977-1985 is the perfect antidote the Star Wars cynicism that has become the norm for so many fans like me. Take a few minutes to browse through these pictures, and remember. These are the golden years of fandom.Solar Flare: Science Fiction News, Jun 2008

Getting inspired. How about building your own Millennium Falcon? Head on over to this site to build your very own Millennium Falcon from the paper patterns that you can find here.

I had a similar experience as a kid of the same age. While Star Wars dominated my childhood (in a very good way!), for the life of me I can't remember the first time I actually saw the first movie.

I definitely didn't see it when it first came out in 1977 as I was only four. But I saw Empire Strikes Back in the theatre and had already seen Star Wars by then (and had tons of the toys).

Don't think it was on VCRs, which really weren't around much until the early 1980s. I digress, but I remember our first experience renting movies, where you'd rent the movies and the VCR itself. And the VCR's remote control, was actually on a very long wire attached to the machine! My mom's boyfriend was an ex-military police, so my first experience renting movies was in the general store on a base east of St-Laurent around the Rockliffe Parkway I guess it was. At that point, they had a wall of Beta tapes and another of VHS ones, which was very frustrating, as you'd find some movies you wanted in one format, while others in the other, but you were only going to rent one machine, so had to pick which format had the best movies that week.

Anyway, back to Star Wars. I don't know when I first saw it and my parents of no clue, which kind of boggles my mind considering how obsessed I was with Star Wars as a kid - you'd think they'd remember. Anyway, maybe it was on TV, or most likely I probably went to see it in the theatre in 1978 or 1979 when it was re-released. But can't say for sure, which has always kind of bugged me. Figure it ought to be a milestone in my life that stands out, unfortunately it's lost in the haze.
